Nick Roxborough’s Rewarding Pupillage at Kenworthy’s Chambers

Kenworthy's Chambers | November 30, 2022
Nick Roxborough describes his pupillage experience at Kenworthy’s Chambers and provides some advice for aspiring Barristers undertaking pupillage.

“My pupillage has been the most interesting and rewarding experience I have had to date, and I am eager to learn more as my time with Kenworthy’s continues.” – Nick Roxborough, Pupil at Kenworthy’s Chambers

Kenworthy’s Chambers took on three Pupils after receiving extremely strong pupillage applications this year.

Nick Roxborough, Colette Snape, and Matthew Todd have been spending the first three months of their pupillage with Pupil Supervisors.

We caught up with Nick, who is learning under the supervision of Criminal Barrister Sara Haque, to find out more about his experience so far and to pick up some tips for aspiring Barristers undertaking pupillage.

“My first few months have been enjoyable and informative. I have gained crucial experience in more serious Criminal Law cases, shadowing counsel on cases including murder, drugs conspiracies, and serious sexual offences.”

Describing his experience shadowing counsel as invaluable, he elaborated saying, “Witnessing expert advocacy is to be expected when undertaking pupillage with a set such as Kenworthy’s, but the client care I have witnessed has been just as impressive and I have taken away some very valuable lessons.”

Having previously worked at Bolton Metropolitan Borough Council as a Clerk and a Legal Assistant, Nick Roxborough has experience working with courts, counsel, and Lawyers. He can now add experience working with vulnerable clients to that list, gained from the first three months of his pupillage.

“I have learned how to work with vulnerable and challenging clients and how counsel manages their busy diaries with conflicting interests,” Nick said.

So, what advice would Nick give to aspiring Barristers looking to progress their legal careers with pupillage?

He said, “My advice to anybody within their first three months of pupillage would be to take in as much as possible, and not just in the courtroom!

“I have quickly learned that the communication and the work done outside the court is just as important as the advocacy within it. But my most important advice for legal professionals looking to begin their career would be to enjoy it!”

Top advice from a young legal professional who had already completed extensive shadowing with Counsel and Judges in criminal, family, and civil proceedings prior to joining Kenworthy’s Chambers! As such, the final word is reserved for Nick Roxborough.

“My pupillage has been the most interesting and rewarding experience I have had to date, and I am eager to learn more as my time with Kenworthy’s continues.”

Kenworthy’s Chambers took on three pupils to expand services in General Law.
