Matthew Todd is a specialist Employment and Civil Barrister. Managing a busy mixed practice, Matthew is frequently instructed in a range of Employment Tribunal proceedings and County Court claims, up to and including the fast track. 

Matthew Todd’s approach to cases is meticulous and precise, identifying key issues and delivering focused submissions. Clients have noted Matthew’s ability to take complex cases and create succinct and persuasive advocacy. His witness handling in cross-examination has been described by clients and Judges alike as tenacious and pragmatic. Matthew is also noted for his ability to connect with clients, providing straightforward advice in a clear and approachable manner.

Barrister Matthew Todd has volunteered with Greater Manchester Law Centre and conducted pro bono representation via both Advocate and the Free Representation Unit. Matthew Todd was nominated for Pro Bono Barrister of the Year at the Greater Manchester Pro Bono Awards 2024.

In his spare time, Matthew plays in a brass band that has competed at regional and national levels. 

Employment Law

Matthew Todd represents employers and employees in all areas of Employment Law, including discrimination cases, whistleblowing, equal pay, unfair dismissal, and TUPE. 

Before being called to the bar, Matthew Todd worked as a Paralegal in the Employment departments of two prestigious national legal firms, spending time working on major group equal pay claims, including Ahmed v Sainsburys Supermarkets and Brierley v Asda Stores. 

A recent instruction for Employment Barrister Matthew Todd is a complex whistleblowing case against a private employer, including a successful application to amend the claim to include over twenty-one new protected disclosures.

He has successfully defended a discrimination claim involving maternity pay and shared parental leave against a local government respondent.

In another recent instruction, Employment Barrister Matthew Todd drafted a response to an appeal where the claimant had been successful at first instance in a victimisation claim.

During his pupillage at Kenworthy’s Chambers, Matthew assisted Supervisor Bruce Henry with written advice on potential claims, preparation and research for Tribunal proceedings, as well as providing training to USDAW union representatives on how to prepare cases for their members.

  • Crichlow v Manchester City Council – successfully defended claims of direct and indirect discrimination where a claimant who took shared parental leave sought to compare himself to women on maternity leave.
  • Newton & Peel v Moortown C-Store Ltd – successfully represented the claimants in a claim for wrongful dismissal and unpaid redundancy pay following a failure by the employer to offer suitable alternative employment.
  • Lacey & ors v Urban Splash House Holdings Ltd – successfully represented eight claimants in a protective award claim where the respondent had denied that any claimant belonged to an establishment with 20 or more employees.
  • Gohil & ors v Weetabix – successfully resisted a £20,000 costs application made by the respondent. 
  • Muzadzi-Matika V Royal Salford (NHS) Foundation – represented the claimant in a complex hearing involving racial discrimination and unfair dismissal. 
  • Best v Halfords – secured findings of harassment and racial discrimination for the claimant after a five-day hearing, acting pro-bono.
