Sally Penni Awarded an Honorary Doctor of Laws by Manchester Metropolitan University

Kenworthy’s Chambers’ Criminal Barrister Sally Penni was awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws by Manchester Metropolitan University in recognition of her distinction in the field of law and her contribution to their academic works.

Sally Penni was given the award during a week of graduation ceremonies, alongside other notable figures who made major contributions towards the academic work of the University and earned distinction for services to their respective sectors.

Her ceremony took place on 12 July 2022, in the home to The Halle Orchestra, the world-famous international concert venue, The Bridgewater Hall.


The other honorands, granted awards in the same week as Sally Penni MBE, included Vanda Murray OBE, Fasha Mahjoor, and Lord Scriven.

Vanda Murray was awarded a Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) in recognition of her achievements in business.

Fasha Mahjoor was awarded an honorary Doctor of Science for contributions to the analytical sciences and charity support.

Lastly, Lord Scriven was also awarded a DBA for contributions to the health sector, and public service work focusing on youth homelessness and international LGBT rights.

After being presented with her honorary Doctor of Laws, Sally Penni said: “Wow! Thank you so much, I am so chuffed to receive such an amazing honour.”

Besides her work in Employment Law and as a Criminal Barrister, Sally Penni is a diversity leader and a passionate supporter of women in business. She sits as the Vice Chair of Association of Women Barristers and as a Board Member at The Advocates Gateway. In addition, she provides mentoring to students and young professionals and was awarded as the winner of The Outstanding Woman in Professional Services 2021.

Sally Penni has a long-standing relationship with The Manchester Metropolitan University and recently attended their chancellors’ dinner to learn about some of the amazing work the University has been doing including the brilliant first generation programme and becoming the leading university on sustainability.
