Businessman Spared Prison After Fierce Defence by Stephen Tettey

Stephen Tettey | March 25, 2026

A local businessman has avoided an immediate prison sentence despite admitting to a violent attack involving a bat, a knife, and a car, thanks to the skill and persistence of leading Criminal Defence Barrister Stephen Tettey.

The businessman was originally charged with attempted wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, an offence carrying a significant risk of a very lengthy custodial sentence. The case, which had dragged on for some time, appeared to be heading towards a near-certain and long prison term. However, through tactical know-how and strategic negotiation, Criminal Barrister Stephen Tettey was able to secure the substitution of a significantly lower alternative charge.

With the lesser offence accepted, attention turned to the sentence. Here, Stephen Tettey’s oral advocacy and written submissions proved decisive. Drawing on his ability to think outside the box, he worked closely with the client’s Solicitors to prepare a comprehensive mitigation package, presenting the businessman not simply as an offender but as a vulnerable individual with deep roots in the community and strong prospects of rehabilitation.

The court was persuaded to impose a sentence that avoided immediate imprisonment. In fact, the court adopted the very sentence suggested by Kenworthy’s leading Criminal Barrister in his submissions. This allowed the businessman to continue supporting his family and maintaining his business.

Commentators noted that the outcome reflects Stephen Tettey’s tenacity, tactical vision, and persuasive advocacy. His ability to negotiate down a grave criminal allegation and then marshal mitigation so effectively underscores why he is regarded as one of the most resourceful and determined Barristers in the field of serious criminal defence.
