Janet Cragg is a Family Law, Mental Health and Court of Protection Barrister and Mediator at Kenworthy’s Chambers who also accepts direct public access.

Janet Cragg qualified as a Solicitor in 1995 working at a legal aid firm in Moss Side, where she later became a partner. She was a member of the Law Society's Mental Health Panel and remained a duty Solicitor (court and police station) after joining the Family and Mental Health Teams. She also worked with various community groups providing support and advice.

Janet Cragg was involved in several community-based anti-deportation campaigns and the Bolton 7 Campaign when she represented clients facing criminal charges relating to gross indecency and age of consent in Bolton Crown Court. This landmark case went to the European Court of Human Rights where the appellants eventually received compensation and the laws relating to criminal offences in the field were amended shortly thereafter. Janet also represented one of the Guantanamo Bay detainees upon his return to the UK for further questioning.

Throughout her legal career, Janet has obtained a wealth of experience in legal aid and community care issues, giving her a valuable insight into the family courts.

Family and Finance

Janet Cragg's Family Law practice includes forced marriage applications, domestic violence, abuse and public law children work.

She represents parents and other family members in residence and contact disputes (Child Arrangement Orders) and emergency orders such as prohibited steps.

Janet Cragg has a particular interest in working with parents and older children in care proceedings. She is an expert in non-molestation applications for applicants and respondents. She has experience working on special guardianship orders, giving advice on judicial reviews and SGO payments.

Family Barrister Janet Cragg regularly provides CPD training at Kenworthy’s Chambers on children and family matters.

Janet Cragg is currently developing a portfolio of work in family cases with immigration, asylum, or mental health elements. She also enjoys work on Human Rights issues involving European provisions in the Family Proceedings Court, County Court, and the High Court

Court of Protection

Janet Cragg represents people detained under the Mental Health Act at Tribunal hearings and provides advice in relation to associated matters in the Court of Protection.

She was on the Mental Health Panel for 10 years and during that time she represented hundreds of people detained in local hospitals and secure hospitals such as Ashworth and Alpha.

As a Mental Health Barrister, Janet Cragg has represented nearest relatives applying for discharge or opposing displacement applications in the County Court and at Tribunal and Hospital Managers hearings. She has also successfully secured the return of a family member from long-term care.

Janet holds a keen interest in community care. She often works with deaf clients and on cases involving care planning for young people with enduring care needs and mental capacity problems.

Janet keeps up to date with the latest developments in Mental Health Law and attends the local Mental Health Lawyers Group.
