Anisa Niaz practices in employment, immigration and prison law. She has a background in discrimination and asylum policy and was called to the Bar in October 2004. She completed pupillage at Doughty Street Chambers, London before joining Kenworthy's Chambers in January 2007.
After gaining an LLM in public law in 2000 she went on to work as a legal policy officer on the discrimination and asylum projects at JUSTICE, the all party law reform and human rights organisation. She then moved to the European Council on Refugees and Exiles (ECRE) in mid-2003 to work as a policy officer and from there to the Organisation for Security and Co-Operation in Europe's (OSCE) Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) before starting the bar vocational course (BVC) in September 2003. On completion of the BVC she worked as a Discrimination Policy and Legal Officer on age and race discrimination at the Policy Research Institute on Age and Ethnicity and then as a Discrimination Legal Policy Consultant for the 1990 Trust, where she headed up projects on the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) and for Citizens Advice on the ability of Bureaus around the UK to provide adequate practical advice on employment discrimination law.
Anisa has provided pro Bono advice and representation on employment law matters since 2003.
Anisa is a member of the Employment Lawyers Association.

Civil practice:
Anisa has a particular interest in Employment law and discrimination and regularly appears before the employment tribunal. She accepts instruction, including on a pro Bono basis, in a wide range of employment cases, including unfair dismissal, redundancy, pensions, protection from detriment on grounds such as protected disclosures and discrimination on all prohibited grounds. Anisa recently won a complex direct and indirect sex discrimination claim against Manchester City Council on behalf of a female black cab driver which has lead the Council to re-draft it's entire vehical licence allocation policy.
Anisa also provides CPD accredited training on Employment law to solicitors both in Chambers and externally.
Anisa was junior Counsel in the Court of Appeal case of Arthur v London Eastern Railway Ltd (Trading as Stansted Express) [2006] EWCA Civ 1358, a leading case on jurisdiction.
Anisa also has a keen interest in prison law and has extensive experience of representing inmates during prison adjudications and has developed a working knowledge of the law and practices relating to such adjudications. She regularly represents prisoners at parole board hearings and also frequently advises on potential judicial review challenges in the area of prison law, including drafting grounds and representing prisoners at the Administrative Court at permission and substantive judicial review hearings.
