David Morton Defends Shola McGrath in Perverting the Course of Justice Trial

by Kenworthy's Chambers 07/11/2018

David Morton, instructed by Cuttle & Co Solicitors, represented Shola McGrath at Manchester Crown Square, Ms McGrath was charged with Conspiracy to Pervert the Course of Justice, Contrary to section 1(1) of the Criminal Law Act 1977.

The defendant, a training optician, was charged with perversion of course of justice after the creation of a fake Facebook account and creating content in attempt to assist Antonio Facey's case; her boyfriend had been charged with Wounding with Intent, after an assault outside of a takeaway back in April 2017. McGrath had created the Facebook account in the victim's name and sent messages to lead the police to believe the victim had lied about Facey being his attacker.

David Morton defended his client saying, "She understands the gravity of what she has done. This wasn't her design - she was in a vulnerable position." Antonio Facey was found guilty of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and sentenced to 14 years imprisonment. Judge Anthony Cross QC sentenced the defendant to 12 months suspended for two years and 150 hours unpaid work. The Manchester Evening News reports further here.
