After being called to the Bar in 1997, Alison Mather went on to work for a Solicitors firm, with day-to-day responsibility for their Crown Court department. She joined Kenworthy’s Chambers in 2000.

She also has extensive experience in cases concerning crimes where those involved have mental health issues, child abuse, violent crime, large scale drug offences and subsequent proceeds of crime proceedings and matters concerning firearms and offensive weapons.

With over 20 years of experience in both the Crown and Appellate Courts, Alison Mather has the ability to take on both prosecution and defence work in cases of the utmost severity and complexity. She has a strong legal background in sexual offences and matters of violent crime, serious assaults, and drug-related offences including large-scale importation and often works with young and vulnerable defendants.

Alison Mather is well versed in special measures for vulnerable witnesses and children. She is one of the most experienced Specialist Section 28 Advocates having carried out these types of cases for many years, initially under the pilot scheme and in the more recent roll out of procedures to the wider court system. She is well versed in the requirements of the Advocates Toolkits for Children and Vulnerable Witnesses. Her ability to communicate effectively with both witnesses and defendants with vulnerabilities is supported by her patient and kind approach to those who find themselves in difficult and often alien circumstances.

Alison Mather has knowledge and experience dealing with child abuse cases. She is familiar with the issues that can arise both pre-trial and in handling witnesses.

Criminal Barrister Alison Mather has dealt with offences involving firearms, bladed articles and other offensive weapons. She also has considerable expertise in cases that involve allegations of drug-related offending, from simple possession matters to larger-scale drug conspiracy cases.

As a member of the Mental Health Team, Alison Mather takes particular interest in defendants who suffer from mental health challenges. In her prosecution practice, she has extensive experience working sensitively with those who have suffered physical, mental, and sexual abuse who have gone on to develop mental health issues.
